In chapter 6 of Paine’s “Measuring What Matters”, she talks about how a company needs to look at their consumer feedback and utilize it as much as you can. As soon as I read this chapter, I immediately thought of Facebook. Facebook is the Mecca of social media and has hundreds of millions users who spew data to analyze and interpret. With so many users, you’d think that Facebook would value users opinions and thoughts, but I really don’t think Facebook does. Social media has changed almost all aspects of business. Before the advent of bulletin boards, wikis, and social networking sites, businesses had to rely on occasional market surveys to understand what their customers were thinking (Paine, 99). But, because of social media we now have multiple ways of gaining feedback from our customers and our marketplace directly. According to Katie D. Paine, when monitoring your marketplace, the first step is to set up Google Alerts. Make sure you have set up alerts for all your competitors’ names and brands in addition to the general terms describing your product or market areas (Paine, 100).
